I have a good friend who recently took an international trip into an area of potential conflict to attend a family event. We prayed beforehand that God would carry him on eagle’s wings in safety, and as it turned out, he needed it! The conflict erupted just as he was trying to leave, and it was only by taking some dangerous back roads that he was able to get to the airport in safety to complete his trip home.
The prophet Isaiah wrote about the eagles’ wings that God will use to carry us through times of danger, fear, or exhaustion.
28 Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, the Lord,
The Creator of the ends of the earth,
Neither faints nor is weary.
His understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the weak,
And to those who have no might He increases strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary,
And the young men shall utterly fall,
31 But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:28-31 (NKJV)
Our life’s journey is filled with countless blessings each day. But even amongst all the blessings, there are times when we are pushed up against our limits of tolerance. We have had enough of a bad experience and do not want to take any more of it– just get us out of here!
God understands. Jesus certainly must have felt this way as he bore a wooden cross on his whip-striped back on His way up the hill to Calvary. But God has promised to carry us through our crisis on eagle’s wings. The crisis can be small or great, but in time, it will wear us down. Be it the unceasing cry of a baby or incessant yelping of an unhappy puppy, spilled coffee at an in opportune time, a bout of social anxiety, a lingering depression, an overly critical and unappreciative boss, an angry line of tired and hungry customers, a lengthy illness, or a suddenly dangerous and unruly crowd showing up around us, we all need escape and deliverance from time to time. God has promised to always carry us through to the other side, no matter our trial or trouble.
Many a day has still been young when we encountered a note of fear, tension, or unease in the air. With God’s grace, there will come a better time, be it a rejuvenated afternoon or a new morning to follow, bringing us a sense of peace and hope as we restart our spiritual journey with that new hope. God will perform the miraculous on even the smallest of details in our lives, bringing comfort and relief to our souls.
God is the Creator of all things. It wasn’t an accident, and you and I are not accidents. He loves us and wants to bring us joy each day of our lives, despite the difficult circumstances we often find ourselves in. He will always carry us through if we seek and turn to Him, and many times, even when we do not. He is a God of abundant grace and mercy.
God understands us better than we understand ourselves. He treats us much better than we treat ourselves, and certainly than we treat others. If someone spits in our face, we are strongly tempted to retaliate. But Jesus did not do so on His way to the cross, and He does not do it to you or I if we ignore, defy, or even spit on Him today. His love for us and His patience with us is truly amazing – He is the miraculous and loving God!
May we rest in His power, as if carried on the wings of eagles.
Reflection
Where do you need the grace, mercy, and support of God the most today?
Lord, thank You for carrying us on eagle’s wings through all of the strife and difficulties of our past as well as the problems we are facing today. Help us to see Your loving hand at work in our lives. Thank You for being there, for loving us, and for seeing us through each and every crisis. We lean upon You and the loving sacrifice of Jesus on the cross for us. We pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Have a beautiful, blessed day in the Lord today.
